A painting commission: Positano, Italy
From reference photos to being completed and put on the wall.
Robin contacted me about creating a custom painting to celebrate her husband’s 75th birthday. We discussed options and chose a photo from their trip to Positano, Italy.
Reference photos
We liked the drama of the blue photo—and I recommended adding some of the warmth from the second photo.
The area near the water was stunning.
Developing the composition
I wanted a strong composition, so I sketched some ideas to consider my options.
I settled on a diagonal composition and moved the island over to add some balance with the shore.
Getting to know the landscape
I spent some time getting to know the shape of the rocks and other landscape elements.
I shared this sketch with Robin to ensure she was happy with the direction.
Exploring in paint
I did a small painting sketch to play with colors I might use.
Now, I was ready to paint on the stretched canvas.
The glowing cliffs developed quickly. The challenge in this painting was balancing the water and sky so it didn’t compete with the land.
This is one of my favorite details:
The painting at home
“It looks great in the frame and on the wall. We both love the painting!!
A perfect reminder of our favorite trip.”- Robin McKelvey
I hope your summer is treating you very well!
